Board gamesNo matter what the weather is, no matter where you are placed, if you have a board game at hand then rest assured you shall not be bored. Whether it is sunny or cold, board games can keep the mood of any company and change a lifeless or not so happening evening to an evening of fun, frolic and a dash bit of competition for people with strong nerves, might I add. Board games are so much fun that once you get engrossed in it you would have no idea about the passage of time. You may as well play the whole night and not even realize it till the sun begins to rise and shine on your face. Board games are exciting and the people playing are willing to invest time in finding the best strategy so as to win their opponents. The best part is, some such games have no time duration. A game can go on and on till someone quits or looses. For all those who still have doubts as to what a board game is, though that should not be an issue as most of have grown up around board games…simply put a board game is a game that is played on a board, it has a specified surface, with pieces or counters (that we generally call players) that are placed on, moved across in various directions, or removed from the board. Although board games are usually meant for simple family fun, however, there are many different kinds of board games based on ideas and aspects of real life (like Monopoly), which involves intricate planning, strategizing and concentration in order to win, or on the contrary are created absolutely from the wildest of imaginations, having to do nothing with reality (like Trivia Pursuit). Playing board games has been a part of many civilizations. Infact every culture of people have had their own kinds and forms of board games which has been played from generations to generations of people and families. However, the board games today became popular during the onset of the 20th century with the rise of the bourgeois who had the time and money to spend on cultivating the habits of playing board games as a pastime. Most of the games that are meant for children like Chutes and Ladders and Candy Land are luck based board games. On the other hand, Games like Monopoly and Risk are strategy based games, though it’s needless to say that a bit of luck is required here as well. For example, in Monopoly every time you throw the dice you wish it’s a lucky hand and you hope to have landed on a good piece of property for sale. Then, however, comes the strategy part of it where you think or decide whether or not it is worth buying or putting more money in. Chess, one can say, is a purely strategy based game. Luck over here has no play. So finally we can say that there are two kinds of board games – strategy and luck, however the truth is that most of the games include both luck and strategy and it is not right to classify them according to one or the other. That is something we can only find out by just simply playing them.
